GFCI & AFCI Outlet Installation

Life-saving electrical protection for your home

Life-Saving Electrical Protection

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) and AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are required by modern electrical codes—and for good reason. They prevent electrocution, electrical fires, and shock hazards that standard outlets can’t detect.

If your home was built before the 2000s, or if you’re remodeling, you likely need GFCI and AFCI protection added. Buri Electric provides professional installation throughout Northern Virginia, ensuring your home meets current safety codes.

Understanding GFCI & AFCI Protection

⚡ GFCI Outlets (Ground Fault Protection)

What they do: GFCI outlets detect electrical imbalances (like when electricity flows through water or a person) and cut power in 1/40th of a second—fast enough to prevent electrocution.

Where they’re required:

  • Bathrooms (all outlets)
  • Kitchens (countertop outlets within 6 feet of sink)
  • Garages
  • Unfinished basements
  • Outdoor outlets
  • Laundry rooms
  • Wet bars and utility sinks

🔥 AFCI Outlets (Arc Fault Protection)

What they do: AFCI outlets detect dangerous electrical arcs (sparks from damaged wiring) that can cause fires. They shut off power before a fire starts.

Where they’re required:

  • Bedrooms (all circuits)
  • Living rooms
  • Hallways
  • Closets
  • Dining rooms
  • Family rooms
  • Most residential areas (per 2020+ code)

⚠️ Signs You Need GFCI/AFCI Protection

  • Your home was built before 2000
  • You have outlets in bathrooms or kitchens without TEST/RESET buttons
  • You’re selling your home and the inspector flagged missing GFCI/AFCI
  • You’re remodeling or adding a room
  • You have outdoor outlets without GFCI protection
  • Your circuit breakers don’t say “AFCI” or “GFCI”
  • You’ve experienced electrical shocks near water

Our GFCI & AFCI Services

✓ GFCI Outlet Installation

Install GFCI outlets in all required locations: bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, outdoor areas, and near water sources. Replace non-functioning GFCI outlets. Test all GFCI devices to ensure proper operation.

✓ AFCI Circuit Protection

Install AFCI circuit breakers in your electrical panel (protects entire circuits). Install combination AFCI/GFCI outlets where dual protection is needed. Upgrade bedroom and living area circuits to AFCI protection.

✓ Code Compliance Upgrades

Bring your home up to current electrical code. Prepare your home for sale (pass home inspections). Ensure compliance for insurance requirements. Complete code-required upgrades for remodeling permits.

✓ Testing & Troubleshooting

Test existing GFCI/AFCI devices to ensure they’re working. Diagnose and repair non-functioning protection devices. Replace old GFCI outlets (should be tested monthly and replaced every 10 years).

📋 Current Code Requirements (NEC 2020)

National Electrical Code now requires:

  • GFCI protection for all 125V-250V outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, outdoors, crawl spaces, laundry areas, and within 6 feet of sinks
  • AFCI protection for all 120V outlets in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, closets, dining rooms, family rooms, sunrooms, and most living areas
  • Tamper-resistant outlets in all areas accessible to children

Note: These requirements apply to new construction and major remodels. Existing homes aren’t required to upgrade unless selling, remodeling, or replacing outlets.

💰 Typical Pricing

  • Install GFCI Outlet (single): $125-$175
  • Install AFCI Circuit Breaker: $150-$225
  • Install Combo AFCI/GFCI Outlet: $150-$200
  • Whole Home GFCI Upgrade (5-10 outlets): $600-$1,200
  • Bedroom AFCI Upgrade (3-5 circuits): $450-$900

*Prices include labor and standard GFCI/AFCI devices. Multiple-outlet upgrades receive volume discounts.

Common Questions

How do I test my GFCI outlets?

Press the TEST button (power should cut off), then press RESET (power should restore). Test monthly. If the outlet doesn’t trip or reset properly, it needs replacement. GFCI outlets should be replaced every 10 years regardless.

Do I need GFCI outlets if I have GFCI circuit breakers?

Not necessarily, but we recommend GFCI outlets at point-of-use (bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) because they’re easier to test and reset. GFCI breakers protect the entire circuit but require a trip to the panel to reset.

Will GFCI/AFCI installation fix my home inspection issues?

Yes! Missing GFCI/AFCI protection is one of the most common home inspection red flags. We can bring your home up to code and provide documentation for your closing.
